As for the pricing of the book, we had to work backwards and add up what we had invested

and what would be a fair price. We decided on R70 per copy but that meant we could not give
the huge discounts requested by most bookshops and that is why those who are carrying stock

               are selling at R120 plus.

For anyone intending to write a book, let me add here that, unless you are Wilbur Smith or

Geoffrey Archer, don’t expect to make any money. When Iain and I take into account the time
we have spent on this project and what it has cost us, we have worked for less than R2 an

hour to split between us, and we would need to sell a lot more books to recover all our costs.

In the book there are a few mistakes, some were gratefully brought to our attention and have

been corrected for the reprint, but no doubt there are still more. The book is not complete.

There are many areas only briefly touched on. So much more could be written. I would love
to have included many of the funny stories. The fishermen have a wonderful sense of humour

and it would have been nice to include more of the incidents that have taken place, more

about myths and legends, but there is not enough space in a single volume.

Many people are now coming forward with material, stories and photos and these I am

putting together towards a possible follow-up book, perhaps dealing more with the people of
Kalk Bay. So if anyone has any ideas please contact me.

Some of the key issues mentioned in the book

Now, especially since many of you are involved in other associations which deal with Kalk

Bay, I would like to enlarge on some of the things we mention in the book. It is not my
intention tonight to get involved in any debates. I just wish to highlight some of the

controversial issues. For all of those who depend on the harbour for their livelihood it is very
important that there is a real understanding of these issues.

To start with, we all have strong feelings about Kalk Bay. It means something to all of us.
Why else would we be here tonight? Just because this is an Historical Association does not
