consideration the wishes of the people. It was one thing to react to an emergency, and quite
another to have the people and resources to carry on. There came a point when it was obvious
the venue was unsuitable for long-term occupancy and there was a pressure just to tell people
to go, and not to ensure they went to the best possible place. Philip Greathead was church-
warden at that time, and it may be that the experience he gained led to his development of
sandbag houses in Khayelitsha and Masiphumele.
Conclusion
Well, I began by recounting that incident in the Park in 1980. What makes Kalk Bay the
community it is? How is Kalk Bay a community?
The three ladies, James Baker, Cecil John Rhodes & Archbishop West Jones, the I.O.T.T.
and Cyprian Brooke, Holy Trinity Rectory & Vernon de Smidt, the Poggenpoel brothers and
Viskor, Tommy Carse, The Holy Trinity Club, the Daily Bread, the Haven Night Shelter, our
guests from Crossroads - all these have played a part in creating this community, as have
many others and we ourselves. As we go forward we can learn much from them.
