His uncle’s will included an entail that he, Michiel, could never sell or bequeath any inherited

Alex Calder and the Kings Hotel
Alexander Calder was the first of the Calder family whose association with the Kings Hotel
lasted some 52 years (1909-1960.) He was born in Castletown Olvig in the County of Caithness
in Scotland in 1863. He emigrated to South Africa in the early 1880s and married Ellen Roberts
in the Baptist Church Cape Town on 17 January 1884 at the tender age of twenty-one. They lived
in Wynberg.
In 1894 he and Henry Daniel entered into partnership with T. E. Askew, a Claremont forage
merchant, and they soon became not only the prime retailers for a large number of cart, carriage
and riding-horses in the district, but also the chief suppliers of wood, oil and coal to the well-to-
do householders of Wynberg.
