The Garage on Belmont Road Kalk Bay
So he bought a piece of land in the area ‘Hillside’, where Chartfield Hotel - Strathmore Hotel
are sited. (Fig. 5.25.) Here he opened a blacksmith’s shop. (Fig. 5.26.) He acquired a double
cottage for himself and Edward and a single cottage for Henry and his family in Hare Road,
off Clairvaux Road, so becoming a part of that community. He assisted the fishermen of that
area in many ways.
Then in early 1918 - 19 Edward (Fig. 5.27), who foresaw the demise of the (sailing) fishing
fleet and the approach of the motor car, was sent to Kimberley to apprentice as a motor
mechanic with Mr Joshua. He returned about 1923 - 24 and wanted to open his own business.
JS was then befriended by the American Missionary Society who persuaded him to give his
worldly possessions to God - which he did! - and they disappeared off the scene. His friends
rallied to help him and he acquired the Billiard Saloon in Belmont Road and opened his
blacksmith at the back with the mechanical service in the front. His daughter Maria, after
tending a crippled old resident from the Majestic for 14 years, came back from Johannesburg
and became the bookkeeper for the business. She also discovered that ‘Terenure’, a boarding
house on Lever Street owned by the Clampetts, was up for sale so they decided to buy the
adjoining land and property in about 1935. In 1936, having completed the upgrading and
alterations into flats, and concrete garage and extra flat, they moved in during October 1936 -
JS and his two sons and their families. I, the first grandson, was born on 11 November 1936.
The garage (Fig. 5.28) operated until the early 1960s when the buildings were auctioned in
public and I bought them and still own the flats and single garage. The garage today is used
as secure parking space for a number of cars from the neighbourhood.
Achievements of the Adams Family
Edward and Maria and Mrs Southern Holt started the Eoan Group at ‘Terenure’ and became
the Chairman and Principal for many years. Dorothy and Henry became champion swimmers
in annual galas at Sea Point. Joan became a renowned ballet dancer. I graduated at UCT as a
librarian and spearheaded, inter alia, library development in the Cape. I was also chairman
and president of provincial and national badminton bodies. I received the Presidential Award
