(‘Eastcliffe’) St. James, presented a petition, signed by sixty local residents, requesting that the
KB-MM construct a proper tidal pool.
The Municipality acknowledged this petition as one of importance and included the construction
of the two tidal pools at Kalk Bay, namely Bishop’s Pool and Woolley’s Pool, in their plans. The
construction contract for all three pools was awarded to Charles McGhie, a stone merchant by
trade, at a cost of £647-2-6d. The St. James residents paid in an extra £75 to have the northern
sidewall of the pool raised. McGhie completed Bishop’s Pool and Woolley’s Pool without much
trouble but, as his correspondence of 11 November 1911 reveals, he struggled with the reef at the
St. James pool.
Subsequent to construction of the pool, bathing boxes and other facilities were added and St.
James beach and pool today retain many of their familiar historic elements. (Fig. 2. 25.)
