people associated with Meyer and his caves. Unfortunately, Meyer did not record all of the
recipients of Mole Certificates, and only a few of the original certificates have survived.
Cave Names
Meyer was an enthusiastic cave-namer. During his early years of the exploration of Kalk Bay
Caves (1924 - 1933), he restricted himself to painting cave names near or in the caves, and
what he called visitor’s books. These were patches of white paint on which he painted names
or initials of the people who visited caves. (Fig. 3. 6).

He also labelled places where he regularly stopped for coffee, or just to rest and read the
newspaper. Later on, he appeared to record each climb which he felt was significant, and
painted the number of the climb wherever he happened to stop for tea. Meyer took great care
in choosing the place to paint the name, and took even more care in the painting itself. He
would first paint an aluminium background, followed by a layer of white paint, and lastly a
black border. Once this preparation was complete, the cave name was added to the centre. His
