Bishop Gray died in 1872 and his son-in-law Edward Glover laid the foundation stone of the

new church in August 1873. Glover often stayed at Bishop Gray’s seaside cottage and
conducted services in the old Kalk Bay chapel alongside the school.

Despite being only in their mid-40s the three ladies suffered ill-health and decided to return to
England permanently in July 1877. They sold the orphanage to Mary Arthur of St. George’s

Orphanage (Harrington Street, Cape Town) for a nominal price, as they did the Church to the

Trustees of the Diocese of Cape Town in December 1877.

               Conclusion

In the short space of only seven years these ladies had given Kalk Bay a school, a church, a

rectory, an orphanage, and a cottage hospital – a remarkable achievement which was initiated

by Robert Gray and for which the people of Kalk Bay were extremely grateful.
